Love

I've been meaning to blog about my Love quilt for some time.  I actually finished it in 2009.

Do you ever wonder why there are some quilts that you start that you feel compelled to finish immediately?  This was one of those quilts for me.

Way back in October I saw this post on Red Pepper Quilts and almost immediately had to buy myself a fat quarter pack of Love (I'm such a follower!).  After I received it, I had to make something with it right away.  With Red Pepper Quilts obviously still on my mind, I decided to make a version of this quilt.  It seemed like a match made in heaven - fat quarters, that quilt!  I figured out that with the fat quarters I could cut a 2 1/2 inch strip off the top of the fat quarter - so it would be 2 1/2" by 18" - then cut that strip into fours making pieces 2 1/2" by 4 1/2".  I would then have one "block."  Easy Peasy, right?

Wrong.  Unfortunately, the fat quarters were not accurate fat quarters.  Some (I would say 3/4) were off by a 1/4" to a 1/2".  That's not a lot - and I agree.  However, if you are quilting that 1/4"  or 1/2" makes all the difference.  I didn't ask for more than my fat quarter - I just wanted my full fat quarter.  So, what should have been an extremely easy quilt to make, became a huge pain in the ass.  Okay, so it was probably more of a pain because I was just so irritated.  Do you ever check to see that you've gotten full cuts of the fabric that you order?  Maybe I'm obsessive, but I do sometimes measure (not always).  I once ordered a bunch of 1/2 yard cuts from a highly advertised shop on etsy (who has their own website, too), and every. single. cut. was short.  Even though she has great fabric, I have refused to order from her again.   So now, I check.  If the cut is short, I must say, I don't order from them again.  I have gotten in contact with the some of them - but the resolution was not satisfactory, so I just don't order from them again.  Dang.  Sorry for that rant - moving on.

Even though the quilt was not as easy to cut as I would have liked, I did persevere and get it together.  I had some wonderful Valori Wells flannel that I put on the back.

Then I decided to use the wine spots for the binding because it matched the back so fabulously.  I got those wine spots from Kerri whose an incredible shop, and great customer service!

The one thing that I regret is that I didn't make it longer.  It's about 58" square.  I've never been a big fan of square quilts to use - unless they're really big - they just seem too awkward.  However, by the time I got to this point, I just wanted to be finished with it.  And that's what it is - finished!  The flannel on the back makes it nice and warm, too.

Penny asked me how much fabric I used.  I used all 26 fabrics in the Love line, and of the fat quarters that I had, I used up all but about 10" of the fat quarter.

And, just to show that yes, I am working on other things, here's a tasty little pic of my (too small) design wall.

i never really thought about measuring my fabric before i cut into it. i think i'm going to need to start doing that now. i am so unassuming and expect everyone to be so honest and forthright. i suppose mistakes can happen, but if it happens regularly, that's awful.

on a more positive note, i really like your love quilt! it's such gorgeous fabric. i think it would be difficult to make an unattractive quilt with it!

LOVE your Love quilt, Michelle! I, too, am sorry it was a headache! It turned out so pretty though! I don't usually check the fabric cuts when I order...but when I ordered a pack of 1/8 yards of AB solids, they all measured just under 4 1/4". Hmmm...

Your Love quilt is so gorgeous! Great combo of the fabric and pattern you used. I can't believe some fabric sellers short change their customers. That is so dirty. I am going to start checking the fabric I buy online to make sure it is the right size.

saw this on flickr and had to come read the story behind it. really pretty! as for short cuts...i've stopped ordering from a couple of shops that are consistently short...it doesn't seem like much, but when fabric is that pricey i want every inch.

Your quilts are all just gorgeous!! I totally understand the fabric shortage thing. I used to work in a shop and we always were generous. Now that I have my own online shop, I continue that tradition. I want my customers to be happy.

Hi! My name is erica. Would you be my friend? said...

No way! I just blogged today and typed "(too small) design wall!" :D I wonder whose is smaller? lol

I'm glad to see you back! Love the quilt. I have rec'd some cuts that were wrong, but I haven't checked before I started my project. I agree, it makes all the difference in the world!

Beautiful quilt, and I love the back & binding too! Bummer about the short cuts of fabric. That would really infuriate me. If you let the shop know and they didn't care to make things right for you, maybe you should out them...

I agree, you should post more often! I like how "Love" turned out. Even with all the issues! Can't wait to see how the quilts come out from your design wall too. Now I will have to measure all the fabrics I get. I would appreciate your sharing the shops privately just so if I order from them I will know to check.

the quilt turned out beautifully!

I hate it when fat quarters are a smidge too small...it really ruins things when you're trying to work from a pattern

Well, that is not fun when you don't have the right measurements. I do check my fabrics too. We are paying good money for what we expect.
The finished product looks fabulous.

This is gorgeous! Seeing all of the "Love" fabrics used together like this really brings the line to life!

Oh my gosh, I thought it was just me who has gotten shorted when it comes to fabric. Most of the time, all is well....but there have been a couple of times where the fabric was ripped and the grain was crooked, so I was shorted. Thank goodness this has been rare for me.

There's so much eye-candy in this post! Your Love quilt is lovely, that line is so gorgeous!
I also love the colors of both of your projects on the designwall.
You have a lot of good things brewing...

How unfortunate for you! That sounds really frustrating. I am glad you turned things around and made a really gorgeous quilt!

Your quilt turned out GREAT! I've been "shorted" on a few occassions as well. A vendor at the IQF show last spring shorted me between one and two inches on every FQ (about 10) I bought. I believe it was deliberate (if they short everyone, they get that much more fab out of each bolt, which means more of a profit for them). I was pretty ticked, isn't $10.00 a yard for fabric costly enough!

It's beautiful and I like the design wall goodness too!

I measure my fabric almost every time... perhaps I'm a little anal but if I'm paying for a certain amount, I expect to receieve it... I have had some shocking experience with customer service about it as well, where sellers wanted me to send it back to them at my own expense, or treated me like I was lying... I am like you, if the fabric is short then I won't buy from them again! It's so crazy... I make a lot of nappies/diapers and if the cut isn't the right size then I just can't get my nappy/diaper cut out of it...
Then there are some LOVELY sellers who put an extra centimetre or two on the cut of fabric... now that is something that doesn't cost them a lot to do, but gee it makes the buyer happy... creates such goodwill!

oh my goodness this quilt and the projects on your design wall make me so happy!! such bright and cheerful color combinations! bummer about the inaccurate dimensions of the fabrics and the poor customer service - frustrating!!
